The drainage system presently covers only 55% of the City Corporation area. The mayor has to take an immediate initiative to ensure that within the shortest possible time:

• The whole City Corporation area is covered by adequate drainage system.
• Care must be taken to cover up the open drains with adequate passage and gravity or mechanical pumping arrangements so that dirt does not spill over through the cover or flow back because of blockage.
• The project to mechanically retrieve waste from the drainage system must be started immediately.
• All drains should be cleaned and kept clean at all times. Stagnant dirty water in drains is also the source and place of mosquito breeding.
• All places with stagnant water should be cleaned in cooperation with the owners of the property for better sanitation and health.
• Proper drainage would in turn help recharge groundwater.
• The City Corporation must cooperate and coordinate with DWASA for early completion of Dhaka Integrated Flood Protection Projects and the Kalyanpur pumping stations.
• The City Corporation should coordinate with the government, DWASA, Water Development Board and multilateral agencies to expedite the Flood Protection Embankment cum Eastern By-pass Road Multipurpose Project.
